Protected and restored landmark ecosystems are at the very heart of Sterling Ranch’s vision. From the beginning we worked closely with environmental experts, creating a long-term prairie conservation management plan that minimizes our footprint and provides natural corridors for native and migrating wildlife. When breaking ground to accommodate new growth, we follow strict protocols to preserve archeological items we may encounter. Finally, through dark sky-friendly practices, nocturnal wildlife is protected from light pollution and the stars shine brighter at Sterling Ranch.

Through unique partnerships with other water districts — Denver Water, Aurora Water and several neighboring water & sanitation systems in Douglas County — we’ve created an efficient and renewable water system. We’ve also pioneered a Colorado-first, community-wide rainwater harvesting program, managed by the Dominion Water & Sanitation District. The result is a durable plan for reliable water for Sterling Ranch residents.

Sterling Ranch uses significantly less water than other Front Range communities. Through a longstanding partnership with the Denver Botanic Gardens, we’ve created a list of beautiful drought-tolerant plants that result in landscapes that thrive in Colorado’s arid climate. We orient homes and homesites to maximize water conservation. Homes themselves are equipped with advanced water metering and monitoring systems, along with smart irrigation controls. And this is just a drop in the bucket when it comes to Sterling Ranch’s water-wise innovation.

Colorado’s water system is underdeveloped. Meaning, there’s plenty of water, it’s just not in the right places. We’ve partnered with surrounding water districts to create much needed and long overdue infrastructure that moves water from as far as 85 miles away. Additionally, a new closed-loop utility system — including a water diversion and regional water treatment facility along the South Platte River — will soon be supplying Sterling Ranch’s water so every drop of water can be used efficiently and effectively. Along with simple but effective conservation practices and rainwater harvesting, these state-of-the-art solutions ensure we have access to this important resource for the long term.

It started with a vision and a plan — a path towards renewable electricity without negatively impacting the cost of housing or of energy itself. For instance, our homebuilders are constructing energy-efficient, technology-ready homes designed with efficiency in mind. Every garage is wired for EV charging. We’re enabling our homeowners to power their homes with photovoltaic solar panels or renewable offsets, and monitor their energy use in real time. Community-wide, intelligent streetlights help keep things efficient. The goal is to use 100% renewable electricity by 2040.
